Tried and Tested

Recycled rubber lawn edging : Nortene Selfix Bordura-EcoRub-Caoutchouc Recyclé

I have been looking for some time for something to replace some slates used as a border between grass and an iris bed.

In Magasin Vert, I found this product which I hoped would fulfil the need of both being a recycled product and something that would be resistant to strimming the edge of the grass.

It did not appear to come with any additional fixings nor with any instructions on how to position it effectively; so I began by digging a trench two and a half inches (6,5cm) deep with a spade equal to approximately half the height of the roll.

The next stage was to unroll the edging flat on the ground and I began to try to put the roll into the trench. It soon became evident that it was too flexible to remain stable without some form of fixing and tensioning.

I attached one end to the pergola support with flat-headed nails and, after cutting the edging to size, I stretched it and attached the other end to a pole that I hammered into the ground.

I then started backfilling with earth on the grass side and fresh gravel on the iris bed side.

The edging roll continued to move about until the amounts of earth and gravel were approximately equal on each side.

As the photos of the finished job show, it is possible to achieve a pleasing appearance while maintaining a straight line. It has withstood the force of the lawnmower hitting it but, as the grass has not fully grown against the edging yet, I have not been able to test it with the strimmer!

As the Nortene Selfix Bordura is a flexible material, I think it would be ideal for creating curved areas where you were able to use different materials – gravel or wood chippings for example – on either side of the roll to create interesting features in the garden.
