New Asian Hornet Trap trial

Asian hornets (Vespa velutina) or Frelon Asiatiques are very dangerous for honey bees and their hives and can also be fatal to humans if the person is susceptible to anaphylatic shock.
The sting of an Asian hornet can pierce a wellington boot.

Earlier this year, in February, we found this trap at our local Leclerc store and thought it was worth a trial. It is said to be ‘selective’ that is, it traps the Asian hornets but allows other useful insects to escape by the ramps leading to the slots in the upper part of the body of the trap. It is called Vivert Radical and is made by Créa, part of the Décamp Group, in Bonneville, France.

The trap is fairly easy to assemble, however, the first time I put it in an apple tree it came apart in a strong wind and ended up on the ground. Upon inspection, I found that the body and the base must be strongly locked together. The instructions do say ‘lock’ but you need to make the parts click into place so that they are fully secure.
You will see from the photos that there is a point on the green base that has to pass over the bar on the clear body section, this is the locking mechanism.

There are many recipes for the liquid bait depending on the time of year. In spring, as we are trying to catch the young queens, I use one third each of white wine, pale beer and cassis or a fruit based syrup.
