English version further down the page …

Propagating Pinks and Dianthus
Whilst it’s impossible to work in the open garden, there are things you might like to try to prepare for this year.
It is fairly easy to make new plants from the Dianthus, Pinks and Carnation family at this time of year.

I found a couple of pots of reduced-price dianthus plants in Magasin Vert a while ago and decided to use them to take some cuttings for new plants. Then the original plant can be left to grow on and be planted out later.

You will find the plant is composed of multiple shoots. It is relatively easy to remove the outer shoots from the base of the original plant and it does not matter whether there is evidence of old roots on the shoots or not. In all cases there is a good chance that they’ll root.

Method …
I’m using the potting soil mix that I showed you how to make in this post
Fill the pots with the compost right to the top and firm it down gently.
Make a small hole in the centre of each pot and push the cutting down into the hole.
You then need to firm the compost around the base of the cutting. I use the first 2 fingers of each hand, one in each corner of the pot to firm the compost around the stem.

You can use the same method for the pinks that you might buy from a florist or supermarket. The flowers often have non-flowering side-shoots which can be propagated in the same way.
