Handy hint / Astuce – Mildew/Mildiou

Old tomato, pea and courgette plants
With all the recent rain, certain plants, especially tomatoes, will be rotting and mildewed (mildew is a fungal disease present in the air) if they’re still in the veg patch. When you dig them up, don’t put them in the compost bin! A garden compost heap will not generate enough heat to kill off the fungal spores and you risk contaminating your crops next year.

As bonfires in gardens are now banned for environmental reasons, take all the plants to the tip where they can be composted correctly.

Thanks for the tips Denis.
I have a question on my 2 Quince trees. One is French planted 6yrs ago and the other one is English planted 4 yrs ago. The English one had a fruit on it when it was bought.
Since being planted none have produced flowers and every year the leaves turn brown and die off. This will happen twice in the year!
I suspect Peach leaf curl but I am no expert on fruits. Could you please give us some bio tips to sort this problem out .
Thanks Bryan
